A UK-based social enterprise dedicated to improving educational outcomes for vulnerable students in our society is seeking an accountant to fill the role of Senior Accountant for their team in Cape Town.

As a passionate team, they focus on solving complex social problems using technical innovation to support social innovation. The company works closely with hundreds of qualified teachers, offering academic, subject-specialized, and individual tutoring to children in care and those with special needs.

The ideal candidate would be someone who is passionate about maintaining organized finances to ensure our operations stay on track and lay the foundation for sustained growth. They will also be expected to challenge existing practices, optimize systems and processes, and maintain strong communication skills to provide and receive honest feedback.

With significant growth achieved in recent years, the company strives to continue this trajectory and has established a Non-Profit South African entity to support its UK operations and expand its services in the long run.

Roles & Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Financial Manager and being accountable to the Directors, you will play a crucial role in enabling sound decision-making and leveraging our finances to scale the company’s impact. A positive mindset and a team-focused approach are essential attributes in addition to the following roles:

• Quotation and invoice management.
• Address client queries related to invoices, including updating Xero and other backend systems.
• Ensure timely payment of outstanding client invoices as per payment terms.
• Create and maintain client finance trackers and other finance-related reports.
• Verify tuition hours through the tutor hour reconciliation process.
• Resolve tutor queries, including updating Xero and other backend systems.
• Process tutor invoices for payment, ensuring accuracy through correspondence with tutors.
• Prepare ad hoc or month-end tutor and supplier payment runs.
• Prepare and dispatch purchase orders to suppliers.
• Reconcile bank accounts, investment accounts, and credit cards in Xero with appropriate supporting documentation.
• Ensure adherence to industry best practices where applicable.
• Document, implement, maintain, and enhance financial controls to mitigate financial risks.
• Develop and maintain custom reports, dashboards, and workflows for various business units.
• Maintain and update data in backend databases for accurate financial information.
• Provide formal and informal finance-related training to internal staff, tutors, and stakeholders.
• Prepare and submit VAT returns, income tax returns, company annual returns, and other statutory returns within external deadlines

Requirements

• Qualified Professional Accountant (SA) or AGA (SA)
• 0-2 years of Post-Article Experience
• Exceptional Excel skills
• Confidence to challenge the ordinary and recommend improvements
• Knowledge of Xero will be highly regarded
