Job Description

Reporting to the Editor-in-Chief, the Lifestyle Editor is accountable for overseeing all editing, writing, and publishing on News24’s lifestyle section. S/He will manage the lifestyle team, including section editors from a variety of lifestyle topics. Creating and executing special lifestyle projects and events to maintain News24 Life as a premium lifestyle news destination is critical. The successful candidate will be based at our Cape Town or Johannesburg (Randburg) offices.
Key Responsibilities
(The primary tasks, functions and deliverables of the role)

• Maintain the strong editorial voice and tone of News24 Life, which reflects the aspirations and interests of the target audience;
• Manage, plan, and build on the News24 Life content strategy and vision as a premium and trusted news destination;
• Ensure all lifestyle content (including Arts & Entertainment, Books, Relationships, Wellness, Travel, Food, Wine, and Motoring) drive traffic to the site and contribute to News24’s subscription model;
• Align editorial goals with company strategic direction;
• Have a sound ethical approach to content creation and publication;
• Leverage technology and multimedia capabilities to create, manage, and publish high-quality video content and podcasts;
• Create and implement a daily, weekly and monthly editorial calendar to increase traffic to the site and drive subscriptions;
• Source and create features, ensuring all copy is delivered within stipulated deadlines and to standard, rejecting copy that is not on brief or standard;
• Manage, coordinate and drive daily uploading of relevant, fresh, accurate, premium lifestyle content, ensuring that content is loaded correctly with the correct meta tagging and meta descriptions;
• In conjunction with the publisher, drive initiatives, special projects, events, and other opportunities to grow the News24 Life brand;
• Manage employee performance and daily duties, including setting expectations, providing clear feedback and coaching for improvement;
• Manage all administration related to freelance contracts and invoicing;
• Ensure that the site is meeting its targets in terms of unique users, page impressions, revenue and subscription targets;
• Analyse site traffic and constantly look to improve and grow traffic through modifying editorial coverage, improving packaging etc;
• Provide monthly reports and analysis on News24 Life’s performance using various data sources;
• Oversee and grow social networking and other content distribution channels;
• Create, manage, and deliver regular newsletters and mailers on various topics;
• Manage relationships with the industry, partners and sister publications;
• Stay abreast of current industry standards and techniques, changing internet technology, journalism trends and the competition, to ensure effective content that achieves the publication’s goals;
• In conjunction with the publisher, drive innovative growth opportunities and constantly seek opportunities to build and extend the brand’s online presence.
• Must have an established network of contacts in the South African arts and entertainment industry to ensure knowledge of news, launches and events

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualification in journalism, languages or media studies

Experience

• 5-7 years editorial experience and in online editing
• Prior experience working with Google Analytics and other data tools
• Proven experience in leading a team
• Knowledge of or experience with a variety of lifestyle topics
• Proven experience in breaking stories and generating exclusives
